Prevent mouth breathing
Often snoring is caused by breathing through your open mouth while sleeping. But snoring is not the only result mouth breathing leads to. Compared to nasal breathing, mouth breathing is unhealthy. Most people are breathing through their mouth if there nose is congested. This happens mostly at night which then again leads to snoring. But why is mouth breathing leading to snoring?
Imagine the tissue in your rear oral cavity like a loose sail of a boat. As soon as the wind blows into the sail it starts fluttering and produces a slapping voice. In terms of mouth breathing: is the mouth breathing air (“wind”) blowing into the loose tissue (“sail”), it starts to vibrate and consequently produces snoring noises.
Nose breathing is the natural, physiological way of breathing. It avoids more than mouth breathing dust and dirt parts to enter the body as it does with germs and pathogens. In addition to that, nose breathing brings the breathed air to a body temperature level before reaching the lungs. If the outside air temperature is low the air will be heated up, if the outside air temperature is hot, the air will be cooled down and humidified during its way through the nose. Furthermore, nose breathing leads to a 15% increase in oxygen saturation of the blood. This will cause to an improved oxygen supply of the organs which helps to better regenerate the body – that is to sleep better. Reversely mouth breathing causes a dry mouth, halitosis, inflammations of the mucous membranes of the mouth and in addition to that it increases caries.
But what can you do against mouth breathing by yourself? First of all you should study if you suffer from congested nose frequently. If that is the case, a nose spreader might be helpful for you. A nose spreader is widening your nostrils which promotes nasal breathing. More information about nose spreaders can be found here. Another helpful technique might be a special mouthpeice you can wear during the night.
In its form a mouthpiece is similar to the gumshield of a boxer. It will be placed in between the lips and the teeth without being fixed on the teeth themselves. The mouthpiece avoids breathing through the mouth while sleeping which precludes mouth snoring effectively. At the same time it supports the natural and relaxing nose breathing. The mouth piece is designed very delicate which means that it does not constrain while having in mouth and furthermore conveys a pleasant wearing comfort. Along with that the mouthpiece has a size not to be swallowed or inhaled by accident while sleeping.
