Promote lateral position sleeping
Another very spread reason for snoring is the tongue, falling back into the pharynx. Since this problem only occurs when sleeping on the back, someone should sleep in a lateral position or on the abdomen. Assistance is provided by position therapy. Different products like a position backpack or a position belt avoid sleeping in a supine position.
But why are some people snoring while there are sleeping on the back? Snoring in supine position is called base of the tongue snoring or just tongue snoring. If the tongue muscles become limp, the back part of the tongue (the base of the tongue) is falling back in the pharynx and by that narrowing or blocking the respiratory tracts. The resulting narrows has to be passed while breathing in or out. What happens is that the air will be accelerated and swirled when it is passing the narrows. Hence the surrounding tissue swirling is set into vibration and produces snoring sounds.
Base of the tongue snoring can be compared with an avalanche. The limp base of the tongue is blocking the respiratory tracts in the pharynx like an avalanche is burying e.g. the entrance of a tunnel. If the respiratory tracts (“tunnel entrance”) are partly blocked, only a small amount of air can to flow through the opening. If the respiratory tracts are entirely blocked, air circulation is completely eliminated. The latter would apply in terms of base of the tongue snoring if the respiratory tracts are completely blocked and the patient is suffering from an obstructive apnoea.
Parts of the position therapy are all products which promote sleeping in supine or lateral positions, i.e. sleeping backpacks, sleeping belts and pillows. The rear parts of the sleeping backpacks and belts contain a foam wedge which makes comfortable sleeping in a supine position impossible. The middle of the position pillows is highered compared to the side parts, which is not comfortable to sleep onto either. That forces the head automatically to slide to the one or the other side of the pillow and therefore leads to lateral sleeping positions.
