Become a Side Sleeper to Cure Your Snoring
A very common cause for snoring is the tongue sliding into the back of the throat. Since this problem only occurs when sleeping on the back, the problem can be solved by becoming a side sleeper or sleeping on the stomach. Positional therapy can help you maintain lateral sleep position (i.e. remain a side sleeper) all night long. Different products like a position backpack or a position belt stop you from rolling onto your back.
Why be a side sleeper?
What causes snoring when sleeping on the back?
Why do some people snoring while sleeping on the back? Snoring in the supine position is called tongue-based snoring or just tongue snoring. When the tongue muscles relax during sleep, the while one breathes in and out. What happens is that the air accelerates and swirls when it is passes through these bottlenecks. As the air collides with the flabby tissues in the throat they vibrate causing snoring.
Tongue-based snoring is like an avalanche. The limp base of the tongue slides into the back of the throat and blocks the respiratory tract in the throat like an avalanche burying the entrance of a tunnel. If the respiratory tracts (“tunnel entrance”) is partially blocked, only a small amount of air can to flow through the opening. If the respiratory tract is completely blocked, no air can enter it. This would result in the person not getting any air into their lungs and they would suffer from breathing interuptions (apnea) during sleep. This problem can be solved by assuming a lateral sleep position
How to be a side sleeper all night long
Positional therapy helps you be a side sleeper, it encompasses all products that promote a lateral sleep position, i.e. sleeping backpacks, sleeping belts and pillows. Sleeping backpacks and belts contain a foam wedge which makes it very uncomfortable and near impossible to sleep on the back. In the middle of the a snoring pillow is a central mound, which is not comfortable to sleep on. It automatically forces the head to slide to the one or the other side of the pillow and therefore turns you into a side sleeper.
